How Can Educators and Schools Support STEM Education?

How have humans addressed world problems, discovered remedies to diseases, and created machines that could transport us? Science, technology, engineering, and math have all aided in the creation, imagination, and success of creative minds.

STEM education has never been more important in our ever-changing world. We need a generation that has mastered STEM to solve the next wave of societal problems, but how can schools and district support an effective K-12 STEM Education?

Science and Technology Class

STEM education entails a lot more than just including these four areas into a core curriculum. The real merging of these disciplines into a single "meta-discipline" is the key to successful, effective STEM education.

  • In grades K-6, districts should allocate enough instructional time and resources to science. A good scientific program in the elementary grades, such as Young STEMists, provides a vital foundation that might encourage students to take more science classes in middle and high school and, possibly, to pursue STEM disciplines and jobs.

  • Districts should make sure that their STEM curricula are focused on the most important topics in each discipline, that they are rigorous, and that they are organized as a series of themes and performances. STEM programs in grades K-12 should ideally be aligned across disciplines.

  • Districts must strengthen the capacity of K-12 teachers in order to boost STEM teaching and learning. Teachers in STEM fields should have a thorough understanding of their subject matter, as well as "an awareness of how students' learning develops in that discipline, the types of errors students may create, and ways for addressing students' growing needs."

  • Professional development for instructional leaders should be provided by districts to assist them in creating an atmosphere that supports student accomplishment. When educators collaborate, they can rely on one another for support and distribute tasks that allow each teacher to feel productive. Collaboration among teachers aids in the improvement of schools and the achievement of students.
